I have friends who holidayed in a 'gite' with a pool in France. Fortunately, the pool had an alarm fitted that sounded when someone enters the water.
A child who was with them wandered into the pool unsupervised, and the pool alarm sounded so that the parents were able to get the child safely out of the water.
If you have a pool, or even rent a place with a pool, having adequate pool fencing, or netting or an alarm is absolutely crucial. Even if you don't have small children yourself, you may well have visitors with youngsters who won't be able to resist the lure of the water...
